A 3rd period powerplay goal, and some short term penalty killing in the final frame, helped deliver a 3-2 win on home ice over the visiting Sheffield Steelers in Week 9 Game Day 1 result.
Just before the 5 minute mark, Steelers’ Jordan Owens had the final swipe during a goal mouth scramble to set them in front, but 31 seconds later Jez Lundin tipped a John Dunbar goal line pass to even the count at 1 each. Inside the back 5 minutes, Evan Janssen was all over a loose puck in the crease and he slipped his team in front ahead of the middle set.
Scoring proved difficult to find until less than 3 minutes remained in the 2nd when a Flames break was turned around 2 on 1 for the Steelers, and Jonathan Phillips took it all the way before sniping a perfect high shot to ensure the teams would be square on 2 each at the end of 40 minutes.
At 47:16, while the Flames worked the powerplay, Jesse Craige set up a Calle Ackered one timer that nudged the Flames back in front. As time wound down, and on a powerplay, the Steelers pulled Jackson Whistle for a 6 on 4 manpower advantage, but it was soon wiped out with a Steelers penalty in the final minute that ended the biggest threat to the ultimate result.
“There is a game that could have gone either way,” admitted Paul Dixon. “I thought we controlled the 1st period well, and it might have been nice to be up by more than a goal at that point.”
“Sheffield came on in the 2nd and were much more effective from then, and going through 40 minutes tied at 2 was probably a fair reflection of the overall game by both sides.”
“When you do get powerplays at certain times you definitely need to make them count and that was the difference tonight.”
“One thing we would like to clean up are the late penalties we took. When you have a slim lead with time on short supply for the other team, the last thing you want is to spend the last 5-6 minutes in your own end trying to protect a lead. Luckily, other penalties wiped away most of the danger, but we need to avoid that situation in future.”
“We will enjoy this success and then tomorrow quickly start looking ahead to a challenging weekend on the horizon.”
