Week 1 Game Day 1
NOTTINGHAM PANTHERS 5 SHEFFIELD STEELERS 2
Rich Chernomaz reign as Nottingham Panthers coach got off to the perfect start on Saturday night, as his side beat arch rivals Sheffield 5-2 at the Motorpoint Arena in the Challenge Cup.
Robert Farmer put the Panthers ahead after 11 minutes, with Mark Hurtubise doubling the advantage 21 seconds into the second period when he scored on the power play.
Sheffield had arguably the better of the play for the remainder of the frame, eventually receiving their reward in the final seconds of the period when Josh Pitt beat Panthers goaltender Mike Garnett to make it 2-1 at the second intermission.
Nottingham were quick to restore their two goal advantage however, Tommy Hughes shot three minutes into the final frame beating Steelers number one Jackson Whistle to make it 3-1.
A quick fire double from Jaynen Rissling and Brett Perlini, scoring just over 90 seconds apart, put Nottingham firmly in the drivers seat entering the final stages of the game, and though Jordan Owens grabbed another goal for the Steelers with just over two minutes to play it proved to be little more than a consolation marker as the Panthers wrapped their first win of the season.
